Easter Week

Dear Berlin Center and LeValley UMC family,

I am writing this article in the midst of Easter Week.  I am anticipating a new experience at our Good Friday Community service held at First United Methodist Church in downtown Ioina from 4pm-8pm.  We will be on a self-guided walk and time of reflection at 10 stations of the Cross.  I know that I am used to a traditional hurch service on this day and this does take me out of my normal safe comfort zone, but let's see if we can look at the death of Christ in a new way this week.

When we get to Sunday this year there will be no surprise for us like there was for the followers of Jesus as the Bible tells us.  Even though they were told by Jesus that he would be killed and on the third day rise from the dead they were not expecting that to happen.  John 2:13-22

Jesus Clears the Temple

It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celbration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem.  In the Temple area he saw merchants selling cattle, sheep, and doves for sacrifices, he also saw dealers at tables exchanging foreign money.

Jesus made a ship from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple.  He drove out the sheep and cattle, scattered the money changer's coins over the floor, and turned over their tables.  Then, going over to the people who sold doves, he told them, "Get these things out of here.  Stop turning my Father's house into a marketplace!"  Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures:  "Passion for God's house will consume me."  But the Jewish leaders demanded, "What are you doing?  If God gave you authority to do this, show us a miraulous sign to prove it,"  All right," Jesus replied.

"Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up."  "What!" they exlcaimed, "It has taken forty-six years to build this Temple, and you can rebuildd it in three days?"

But when Jesus said "this temple," he meant his own body.  After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered he had said this, and they believed both of the Sriptures and what Jesus had said.
